Absenteeism

Each school in Shenandoah County addresses the issue of absenteeism in accordance with the Code of Virginia and Shenandoah County School Board Policy.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact the school when a student is absent. If no contact is made, the school representative shall attempt to contact the parent/guardian by telephone.

Individual cases of what may appear to be excessive absenteeism due to illness, a death in the family, a pre-approved absence, or other incidents which have been discussed with the school administration may be excused and result in no further action.

Excessive Absenteeism

The Code of Virginia specifies that nothing written in specific sections inhibits the attendance officer from seeking immediate compliance with school attendance laws. Therefore, students who have missed an excessive number of school days, may have a petition filed in their name immediately following a referral from the school.
